Punta Gorda, Florida

Punta Gorda means "fat point" or “broad point in Spanish. Legend has it that in 1513 Ponce DeLeon named it because he first landed there at a broad part of land in Charlotte Harbor. Charlotte Harbor is where the Peace River meets the the Gulf of Mexico.

Punta Gorda, the only city in Charlotte County, 100 miles south of Tampa between Sarasota and Ft. Myers. The city was founded in 1887 It has had an interesting history and has grown to be the center of the best boating in Florida. In 1997, Money magazine ranked Punta Gorda among the top 20 best places to live in America.

The city is situated on Charlotte Harbor. To the south and west are citrus farms and cattle ranches. Further inland begins the swamps that become the Everglades. The first city to the south is Fort Myers.

Punta Gorda is a mix of families, retirees and winter residents. The wonderful lifestyle draws people from all over the country and the world.

Charlotte Harbor is 129 square miles of great boating, fishing and sailing. Birders will enjoy the great mix of avian life. Tours at the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center will be a highlight of your visit.

In the downtown section of Punta Gorda, brick and cobblestone streets welcome the visitor. Royal Palms and Hibiscus grace the streets. Punta Gorda is known as the City of Hibiscus for its abundance of these beautiful flowers. When in town, visit the many fine restaurants, including The River City Grill, The Turtle Club and The Celtic Ray.
